The drive
The road climbs from the coast onto the A1 and crosses the Velebit range through the Sveti Rok tunnel, then drops into the Lika plateau. It is a short, uncomplicated drive with one genuinely dramatic stretch where the sea disappears behind the mountain and the temperature drops several degrees within a few minutes.

Worth knowing before you book
The best day-trip base
Out and back from Zadar in a day leaves you four to five comfortable hours at the lakes. We wait while you walk and drive you home — no watching the clock for a return bus.
Bring a layer
Plitvice sits at 500–700 metres and runs noticeably cooler than the coast. People arrive from Zadar in beach clothes in June and regret it on the upper lakes.
No Rastoke on this route
Rastoke is north of the park, so it is not on the way from Zadar. It is included free from Zagreb, Rijeka and Ljubljana instead.

Can we do Plitvice as a day trip from Zadar?
